THE MAKING OF THE BO-KAAP
Stephen Townsend, architect, conservationist and independent researcher
Thursday 21 January < 5.00 pm < COURSE FEES R115; Staff and students R58
Stephen Townsend will describe the process of the making of the Bo-Kaap on the edge of the city centre of Cape Town from 1762, touching on the major events and dynamics affecting the development processes. In particular, it will look at the effects of the City Council’s expropriation of about 300 dwellings in the 1930s, the ideas of conservation from the mid-1940s, and how those thoughts (and laws) have developed (including the World Heritage Convention’s criteria of authenticity and integrity). He will also touch on his own involvement in these processes since the early 1970s.
