This workshop, which introduces art therapy, will include some lecture style information using slides, case study examples and excerpts from texts and podcasts. These will be interspersed with hands-on experiential learning to deepen personal insights. It will use art directives to understand some art therapy concepts such as materiality and containment. Participants will also learn about the use of play and creativity. No art experience is necessary to participate in this course. Topics covered will include:

  • art therapy basics – what art therapy is and what it is not
  • who can benefit
  • art therapy with children, with adults, with groups
  • directive versus non-directive art therapy
  • the use of imagery, metaphor and symbolism.

In addition, we will touch on psychosocial and psychoeducational tools, and ideas from neuroscience, mindfulness and coaching that connect to art therapy. Participants will understand why art therapy works so well, the meaningful power of art and its therapeutic value for healing and self-care. The experiential nature of the course will further participants’ growth in self-awareness and personal development through self-reflection.
