ANAESTHESIA DURING THE ANGLO-BOER WAR

Tuesday 21 January 1.00 pm COURSE FEES R110; Staff and students R5This lecture begins with a brief history of the significant events which occurred in medicine leading up to the beginning of the Anglo-Boer War, including a brief history of anaesthesia, and more particularly the introduction of anaesthesia into South Africa. The focus of the lecture will be on the clinical practice of anaesthesia in South Africa during the Anglo-Boer War, on both the British and Boer sides. It explores the anaesthetic agents available at the time, their advantages and disadvantages, and the anaesthetic delivery devices used during the war.
