This three-lecture course will first concentrate on some rights of consumers under the Consumer Protection Act, focusing specifically on the consumer’s right to quality goods and services. This includes a discussion on the remedies for consumers aggrieved by the quality of the goods and services. The course will also consider some aspects of consumer rights under the National Credit Act, which governs consumer credit agreements, and focusing particularly on the rights of borrowers and an overview of prohibited lending practices.

Tjakie Naude has been a Professor of Private Law at UCT since 2009. Her fields of teaching and research are the Law of Contract, including Specific Contracts, and Consumer Protection. Before that she worked at Stellenbosch University and is also an admitted attorney. She is co-editor of the leading Commentary on the Consumer Protection Act, published by Juta and updated yearly. She has also been involved in international research projects on Consumer Law.

Sapna Mesthrie has been a lecturer in Commercial Law at UCT since 2022. Prior to that, she completed her articles of clerkship at ENS Africa and specialised in financial services regulation. Her research interests include financial consumer protection, particularly consumer credit law and insurance law. She teaches Commercial Transactions Law and Insurance Law to final year LLB
