Joline Young will give a presentation, An Overview of Cape Slavery, which will be followed by a discussion of her book, An Uncomfortable Paradise, which deals with the history of indigenous dispossession and slavery in Simon’s Town. Joline will be in discussion with Sandra Rowoldt Shell.

Joline Young is a social historian and heritage consultant with a Master’s degree in historical studies with distinction (UCT), for her thesis on The Enslaved People of Simon’s Town. Joline has recently commenced a PhD at the Centre for African Studies at UCT on the subject of “Multilingual worlds – neglected histories: Uncovering their emergence, continuity and loss in past and present societies,” for which she was awarded an ERC scholarship. She is being supervised by Dr Alexander Andrason. Joline’s book, An Uncomfortable Paradise, for which she received a small author’s grant from ANFASA (the Academic and Non Fiction Author’s Association of South Africa) in 2009, is a labour of love that has taken many years to research. An Uncomfortable Paradise is published by Nagspro Multimedia and brings to life the human stories of people who were dispossessed or enslaved in Simon’s Town
