MEETING POINT St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Somerset Road, De Waterkant
Join us for a visit to St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in the historic De Waterkant area. This excursion begins with a brief overview of the history of the church and its surrounding neighbourhood, highlighting the architectural and cultural heritage of one of Cape Town’s oldest urban areas.
The focus then shifts to the church’s fine pipe organ. Participants will discover how this remarkable contraption, famously described by Mozart as ‘the King of Instruments’, produces its sound, how its thousands of pipes are controlled from a single console, and how organists use different combinations of stops to create an astonishing variety of tone colours.
A short recital and demonstration will showcase the organ’s musical and expressive range, from delicate solo voices to its full majestic power. Participants will then have the opportunity to experiment with the instrument themselves, hearing first-hand how different stops and registrations transform its sound.
