Legalisation of assisted dying

‘JP’ is Emeritus Professor of the University of Cape Town (former Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences) and is an Emeritus Editor of the South African Medical Journal. He started the South African Journal of Bioethics and Law. As President of the Association of Medical Schools of Africa he served on the executive of the World Federation for Medical Education and was a member of the team that developed Global Standards for Quality Improvement of Medical Education. He was a member of the Health Professions Council and President of the South African Medical Association.

He was chairman and currently a patron of the APCC (Association of Palliative Care Centres). He is a founder member of the Board of SADPI (the South African Drug Policy Initiative) that advocates for humane, rational drug laws to reduce drug-related harms.

Death is the final fate of us all. Too often this takes place in hospital settings with all the contraptions to delay this event, fuelled by fear of suffering and family pressures. When faced with the prospects of increasing incapacity and dependence on others, some may wish to have assistance to die with dignity. This lecture will explore the medical and ethical reasons for supporting the legalisation of assisted dying.
