NAVIGATING THE TRUMP GLOBAL ERA

President Donald Trump, through his unleashing of sweeping global tariffs, his slashing of aid to developing countries and funding to global multilateral organisations, has caused a great disruption of global institutions, markets, trade and multilateralism. The lecture will look at South Africa’s role in the new Trump global era. It will cover South Africa’s participation in the BRICS Plus alliance, the country’s role as part of the Africa Free Trade Area, and the country’s engagements with other key emerging markets and industrial powers.

Prof William Gumede is Associate Professor, Public and Development Management, and former Convenor, Political Economy, School of Governance at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg; and Professor of Management, Elsenburg, Stellenbosch. He is on the Advisory Board of the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi), Berlin; on the Advisory Board of the Global Reporting Centre, University of British Columbia, Vancouver.

He taught the program for MPs of the British Commonwealth on how to manage the finances of their country Parliaments and how to conduct themselves ethically as MPs. He was convener of the course on public policy for all Members of Parliament in South Africa. He teaches an economic development course for members of the South African National Executive (Cabinet).

He is the Founder and Executive Chairperson of Democracy Works Foundation – now based in 8 countries; the Founder of the Institute for Social Dialogue, which tackles resource conflicts between mining companies and communities.
