The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Centre for Extra-Mural Studies welcomes Dan Remenyi (BSocSc, MBA, PhD) to present a talk for anyone interested in what AI-Chatbots are and how they will impact our society.

More attention has been given to the development of the AI-Chatbot than any other technology in recent years. The media has bombarded us with all sorts of comments about how wonderful this technology is and how fearful we should be of how this technology could develop.

There is no doubt that AI-Chatbots are remarkable. The range of facilities they offer is simply unprecedented and the ease with which they can be used by simply talking to them is extraordinary.

But most of what we are hearing is massively overhyped or simply misinformed. AI-Chatbots will have substantial benefits to organisations and to individuals on a number of different fronts and will therefore play an important role in how our lives develop in the future. However, it is important to recognise that there are downsides to AI-Chatbots and we need to be aware of the many issues involved in their use, including how they will impact productivity, employment, education, and social and political life. This talk is for anyone interested in what AI-Chatbots are and how they will impact our society and will address several of the most important issues of which we all need to be aware.

Dan Remenyi (BSocSc, MBA, PhD) has been part of the ICT industry for many decades and has worked with major suppliers, consultants and with several universities delivering leading edge research. He is particularly interested in artificial intelligence and how it has been developing and what its impact is and will be on the society we live in and on our personal lives. He has written several books on ICT and is currently an honorary professor in two schools of computing. He is an alumnus of UCT.
